Kwak Bin conducted his third bullpen session in the eighth day of the Doosan Bears' first spring camp at Blacktown International Sports Park in Sydney, Australia, on the 10th. The number of pitches was 70, and his pitch was upgraded compared to the past two bullpen sessions.
In Sydney, where rain poured in all morning, Kwak was able to pitch without any effect due to the weather conditions. After warming up lightly after appearing in the bullpen session, Kwak immediately removed all his laughter and showed off his pitching performance as if he were in a real game. After playing battery with Kwak, bullpen pitcher Kim Dong-wook pitched "Nice Ball" one after another, and Kwak Bin, who gained confidence, continued to improve his pitching capability.
The coaching staff was also enthusiastic. Pitcher coach Park Jung-bae stood behind the catcher and applauded with satisfaction whenever Kwak Bin's pitch was made. When a fastball with perfect ball control hit the center, he said, "I'm going to rip your glove."
Manager Lee Seung-yeop appeared at the batter's box while holding a Fun Go bat, and felt Kwak Bin's pitching power in person. "Wow, it's nice. I think Bin took all the balls up to (Hong) Kun-hee's pace," Lee said with a smile. Hong is slowly improving his condition in Sydney as his FA contract is being made late.
When Kwak's pitches exceeded 40, bullpen pitcher Kim Dong-wook complained of pain, saying, "My finger hurts so much," realizing Kwak's pitch. His left hand, which he wore after the pitch, was red with swelling.
Kwak, who was drafted first by the Doosan Bears in 2018, has finally grown into a top starting player in the KBO League in 2023. He pitched well in 127 innings in 23 games with 12 wins and seven losses with an earned run average of 2.90, and finally achieved his first 10 wins in his debut. Kwak has accumulated two more wins, ranking second in overall wins in Korea after Lim Chan-kyu (14 wins) of the LG Twins.
Kwak Bin, who was recognized for his skills, also joined the Hangzhou Asian Games and APBC (Asian Professional Baseball Championship) national teams and won the honor of carving the Taegeuk mark in all three international competitions held last year.
Kwak will be the third starter who will support Raul Alcantara-Brandon Waddell's one-two punch in the 2024 season, and the first starter who will be born in Korea. Kwak has achieved rapid growth last year, as he can replace foreign players if they fail to play in the game. His annual salary also rose from 140 million won last year to 210 million won, and he has become a player earning more than 200 million won.
"Kwakbin's condition is very good. He is even wary of over-pace in the pitcher's part," said Lee Seung-yeop, who met him in Sydney. In fact, when I checked the ball power in the bullpen pitcher's field, I was able to be wary of over-pace.
