England's "Football London" reported on the 20th (Korea Standard Time) that "Tottenham informed Sessegnon that there will be no extension of his contract this summer. Sessegnon had the option of extending his one-year contract, but he will not remain at the club until the end of this month."
Sessegnon is a left wingback born in 2000. Since his debut as a professional in Fulham in 2016, he played 120 games for three seasons, with 25 goals and 18 assists. Notably, he played 46 matches in the Championship (minor league) and recorded 15 goals and six assists in the 2017-18 season. He also has experience in the Premier League. As Fulham was promoted to the PL during the 2018-19 season, Sessegnon played in 35 matches.
Such performances gave Tottenham a love call, and he has been wearing Tottenham's uniform since 2019. However, Tottenham did not get many opportunities. He only played 12 games in his first season as a transfer player, losing out to Sergio Reguilon of the same position. In the end, Sessegnon left for Hoffenheim in the 2020-21 season. His performance was not bad. Sessegnon scored two goals and three assists in 23 games for Hoffenheim.
He rejoined Tottenham ahead of the last season, but the injury hampered his performance. Sessegnon was excluded from the roster due to injury early in the season, and he still had a hard time getting back on track. Then, in the aftermath of Reguilon's injury (COVID-19), Sessegnon started to take the opportunity. He also had good chemistry with Son on the left side.
However, he was frustrated with the injury. Sessegnon had suffered a hamstring injury since February last year, and was ultimately ruled out for the season. He did not return this season. Despite surgery, he failed to improve. In the midst of this situation, Sessegnon's position was gradually diminished as Destiny Udoji returned from loan and played an active role.
Ultimately, Tottenham pulled the plug. Sessegnon is under contract until June 2024. While the one-year extension option is included, Tottenham do not plan on invoking the option. In other words, they will be letting Sessegnon go on free agency.
Sessegnon was not included in the Australian tour either. "For Sessegnon, the nightmare of playing only a small part for Tottenham for two years is coming to an end," Football London said. "The versatile defender had surgery on both his legs due to a hamstring injury that hindered his career." Sessegnon will eventually find a new team as a free agent.
